Station Camp:
On November 15th 1805, the Corps of Discovery arrived at Station Camp and thus brought to completion the remarkable achievement of the Expedition in accomplishing Jefferson’s directive: ?finding those waters communicating with the Pacific Ocean.? Present day Station Camp is a modest roadside park alongside busy State Route 101. Expansion to a larger commemorative park is proposed and will require a new design and re-location of a portion of the highway. A multi-agency planning and development process began in 1999 and is led by the Washington State Department of Transportation and the Washington State Historical Society. The Station Camp improvements are the top priority of all Lewis and Clark projects in the State of Washington and it is anticipated that the project will be completed by 2005.The Pacific County Friends of Lewis and Clark support the Congressional efforts to authorize The National Park Service to conduct a study of Station Camp to include it in expansion of Fort Clatsop making it a regional National Park. The Pacific County Friends of Lewis and Clark support the negotiations underway with Washington State and the private landowners to enlarge Station Camp's present size, with respect for environmental and private property concerns. The Friends asked the University of Washington Landscape Architecture Department to do conceptual drawings of Station Camp. The graduate student designs won both State and National awards. Those designs have been given to both Washington State Parks and the National Parks.

Maya Lin Columbia River Serial Sculpture Series:
Our area has been selected as one of the four sites for a Maya Lin Columbia River Serial Sculpture Series on the Expedition. The Friends are the local organizers for this fabulous artistic opportunity.

Jefferson Memorial:
The Pacific County Friends of Lewis and Clark initiated a collaborative project with University of Washington and Washington State Parks to design a Jefferson Memorial honoring his westward vision realized here by the Corps of Discovery. Monticello is providing background information and the University of Virginia has been invited to join.

Bicentennial Sister City / County Relationship:
The City of Long Beach and Pacific County are formally Sister Cities / Counties with Charlottesville, Virginia and Albermarle County Virginia emphasizing the Jefferson connection. Plans are underway for exchanges of history, speakers, students, flora and fauna, etc.

Discovery Trail:
The arrival of the Corps of Discovery at Station Camp and subsequent (and separate) routes that Captains Lewis and Clark took to the coast (which Clark mapped) to the Cape Disappointment vicinity and present day City of Long Beach vicinity (Clark) is called Discovery Trail. Phase 1 planning has started for a biking and hiking trail from the City of Long Beach to the City of Ilwaco. This route approximately follows Clark’s walk north from Beard’s Hollow and return trip via the headlands between Beard’s Hollow and the City of Ilwaco. The design of the trail has begun in earnest with dedication set for Memorial Day, May 24, 2003.

The Pacific County Friends of Lewis and Clark support efforts to retrace as much as possible Clark's trail from Station Camp to Long Beach, with respect for environmental and private property concerns. This scenic and historic route will be unparalleled along the trail with the backdrop of River and Ocean. The Friends view the trail as an educational experience as well as recreational. The Pacific County Friends of Lewis and Clark support quality interpretive signs.

Ocian In View:
The Pacific County Friends of Lewis and Clark launched an educational Lewis and Clark program over Veterans Day weekend with Professor Robert Carriker, from Gonzaga University, speaking on "Sacagawea's Arrival at the Ocean" and Tony Johnson, Cultural Chairman for the Chinook Tribe speaking on "The Chinooks At The Time of Lewis and Clark". Bus tours were sold out for the weekend. This will be a regularly scheduled event. The Event was made possible by a grant from the Corder Foundation. Other speakers this past year were Dayton Duncan, drawing 230 people on his July 4th talk and Professors Daniel Botkin and Mark Hamilton also realizing audiences of over 100, with people coming from the entire Northwest. Lewis and Clark tours have also been successfully offered to merchants and other local community members.

Grants:
The Pacific County Friends of Lewis and Clark have received two National Park Service grants, one for this website and the other for Interpretation of McKenzie Head, the first ocean campsite of the Corps, matched by the Templin Foundation. The Corder Foundation gave another grant for operations. The Friends plan to do a newsletter with the help of a Pacific County Economic Development Council grant.

School and Community:
Coordination with schools and community groups to present Lewis and Clark programs is underway.
